Our Evaluation Framework

Our evaluation framework provides a systematic approach to assessing digital tools used by students. Every tool is rigorously analyzed across five concrete criteria—data collection, data protection, third-party sharing, legal compliance, and academic integrity. Our transparent, reproducible, and evidence-based methodology ensures students, parents, and educators have the information they need to make safe, informed decisions about educational technology.

1. Data Collection

How much personal information does the tool require? Can you use it without creating an account?

LOW RISK

Asks for minimal personal info. User can access features anonymously or with basic account.

MEDIUM RISK

Requires basic account (name, email). May ask for age/grade. Some tracking of usage patterns.

HIGH RISK

Excessive requests for personal info. Requires full profile for basic use. Aggressive data harvesting.

2. Data Protection & Encryption

Does the site use HTTPS? Is there a clear privacy policy? Have they had data breaches?

LOW RISK

Clear, transparent privacy policy. Uses HTTPS. Encrypts data in transit. 3rd party security audits available.

MEDIUM RISK

Has privacy policy but it's complex/unclear. Uses HTTPS. Limited 3rd party audits.

HIGH RISK

No clear privacy policy. No HTTPS. Data transmitted unencrypted. Data breaches in history.

3. Third-Party Data Sharing

Do they sell your data? Who are their 'partners'? Can you opt-out of tracking?

LOW RISK

Explicitly states they DO NOT sell data. No ads or minimal, non-invasive ads. No tracking pixels.

MEDIUM RISK

Unclear about data sharing. May share with 'trusted partners.' Ads present but not excessive.

HIGH RISK

Openly sells data to advertisers. Aggressive ad networks. Heavy tracking. No opt-out.

4. Legal Compliance (COPPA, FERPA, etc.)

Is it COPPA-compliant (safe for under 13)? Is it FERPA-compliant (protects student records)?

LOW RISK

Explicitly complies with COPPA and FERPA. Privacy-by-design. Age-appropriate safety features.

MEDIUM RISK

States compliance but not well-documented. May only partially follow COPPA/FERPA.

HIGH RISK

No mention of COPPA/FERPA compliance. Violates student privacy laws. No age-appropriate safeguards.

5. Academic Integrity Design

Does it teach you or just give answers? Is it designed for learning or shortcuts?

LOW RISK

Designed to TEACH concepts. Guides you to answers (Socratic method). Encourages learning over shortcuts.

MEDIUM RISK

Mix of learning tools and potential shortcuts. Could enable cheating if misused.

HIGH RISK

Designed primarily for plagiarism/cheating. Direct essay writing, answer copying. No learning value.

Overall Risk Rating Scale

Low Risk

Safe to use. Transparent privacy practices. Designed for learning.

Medium Risk

Use with caution. Review privacy settings. Follow school guidelines.

High Risk

Avoid if possible. Privacy violations, cheating facilitation, or security issues.
